[Spoken by Srila Gurudeva on July 7th, 1997, in Holland, published as part of the Bhakta Bandhav Anthology, Volume 21]
Srila Gurudeva: Morality does not come only from man, it comes from God, who has created this world. He has given all kinds of intelligence, heart, mind, body, and everything. You know that without air, we cannot live for a moment. Without the sun, we cannot live. Without water, we cannot live. Without this earth, we cannot stand anywhere. Without the sky or empty space, we cannot live a moment. Everything has been arranged by Krsna. Krsna means God. So, should we not be moral for Him? We must be moral for Him. We have some duties to Him. Morality comes from Krsna, God. But if you are moral to only human beings and are killing cows, this is not morality. Because the same soul lives in cows, in trees, in creepers, and in every human body. It is not confined only to those souls in Holland either. Should we not be humble and moral for any Indian or French or Englishman or anyone else? This is not morality. Morality comes from the soul, and the soul comes from God from which all creation is coming.
God is favorable to all. So morality comes from there. We should try to know this, go deep, and not have a very confined mind. If there is no religion, no morality is there. That morality will be confined to someone. To his family only or to his native place or his country only. They will not think beyond that. Or it will only be for humans. But why are they quarreling? Why are they quarreling? So there is no real morality. To have love and affection for Krsna is morality. This is the root of all morality. If this is okay, then morality will come by itself. Otherwise, artificially, if you are having morality for some people in a confined way, for you and your country, you and your place where you are, only for some, then that morality may change in a minute and you will be the enemy of all. That morality is not durable. There is very little morality there. Morality does not come from man. Because the jiva is part and parcel of Godhead, all qualities come from Him. A person who does not have faith in God cannot have any morality. In Vedas and Upanisads it has been told like this. Morality does not come from man. If someone does not believe in God, no quality can come, never. Or if it comes it will at once go away, like a flash. Like a flashing light, it will go. Never will never stay.
