What is Yoga?

Those who are not accepting this, their yoga is like zero. If there are not two or more things, then how can they be added together? They cannot be connected. So, there are so many…

Srila Gurudeva: Krsna is one thing. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is one thing. And we, the conditioned soul, have forgotten that Supreme Personality. These conditioned souls want to be happy and they do so many exercises for this. But they will never be happy without meeting Krsna. So, what is yoga? One plus one becomes two, this is the theory. One thing is God and another thing is the soul. If they are together, then this is yoga. If there is only one thing, then how will it be yoga? There is nothing else to add to that one thing. There must be two things, or four or five things, then when they are connected and they are added together, then it becomes more.

Those who are not accepting this, their yoga is like zero. If there are not two or more things, then how can they be added together? They cannot be connected. So, there are so many innumerable souls and they should be connected to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is yoga. A yoga, or connection from the atma to the Paramatma or the soul to the Supersoul. This is yoga. If there is nothing to connect to, if God is formless and the soul is also formless, then how is yoga possible? What is the result of zero plus zero? There is no possibility of yoga at all. So in this world, all these ‘yogas’ going on in the name of yoga are really not yoga. Yoga is only when any soul is connected with the Supersoul, then it becomes yoga. We are doing exercise and we are saying that we are doing yoga, but what yoga is there?

In performing worldly exercise, what actual yoga is there? What is being added together? What two things are being connected by doing this exercise? This is not yoga. There must be two things. Also, if the soul has no form and there is not another thing to connect with, then there will be no yoga. If God is alone, formless, and there is nothing, then there is no yoga. We will have to come to the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita to know what yoga actually is. I will give an example so that you can understand very easily. Suppose there are two bricks and we want to join them together. We will have to bring mud or cement or so many powerful things to join them. If there are not at least two things, then we cannot join one thing with another thing. If only one thing is there, if there is not another thing, then there is no yoga. Also if there are two things but there is no adhesive like cement or anything like glue which can join them, then they cannot be connected. So if you want to add one brick to another, then you will have to use some cement and then it will be like concrete.

[Spoken by Srila Gurudeva on December 18th, 1998, Bali, published as part of the Bhakta Bandhav Anthology, Volume 24]
