Srila Gurudeva: Once, there was a brahmana in South India. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was on a tour of South India and went to Sri Rangam. This brahmana had not attended any class, no school, nothing. He did not even know the alphabet, ABCD of Sanskrit, Hindi, or anything. But, he used to go daily to the temple of Ranganatha, and at that place, he used to sit and read Gita. He could not utter the pure words of Sanskrit, not anusvara and no visarga. No anusvar or visarga, grammar, nothing. He only used to carry the Srimad Bhagavad-Gita and read, anyhow, something. He always used to weep and weep, tears streaming from his eyes. For one hour he used to read Gita like this. All the learned persons used to ridicule him, “He doesn’t know the ABCD of Sanskrit but yet he is weeping, how? He is a foolish person.”
They used to laugh and joke, “Oh he is a very big pandita.” But Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to him. He used to sit down there, very patiently and honorably. He used to hear what he was speaking. One day, after one hour of hearing, Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked him, “Prabhu, you are reading this book. I am so much weeping. I hear the Gita, but I cannot weep like you. Why are you weeping like so? What impression and mood comes into your heart when you read the Gita?” He was so sincere and simple. He believed in Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He told Mahaprabhu, “I don’t know the ABCD of Sanskrit. I cannot utter really what word is there. But when I open the book, I see that Krsna has come, sitting on the chariot of Arjuna. Arjuna has given up his bow and arrow and cast them aside and he is lamenting. Then Krsna is speaking the Gita to him. I only see, ‘How merciful is Krsna?’ That Arjuna is in a very critical position a
